What does Sammy Leo REALLY think about her staff members?

Today I sat down with Breeze Balms Marketing & Product Development beauty, Amelia who has recently start an instagram @thehappyemployee. This page focuses on opening up the conversation around being a happy employee as well as the importance of staff empowerment in business. I really wanted to share my opinion on this topic so she asked me some pressing questions to see what I truly thought! Let's see what I had to say...

How would you describe yourself as a manager?
I’m not a micro-manager and I feel like I have a good ability to see what people enjoy and put them in roles that compliment this. Also, I’m understanding, fair and maybe a little bit too casual sometimes (haha whether that's a good or bad thing, I don't know!).

What are your thoughts on the quote “If you look after your staff, they’ll look after your customers”?
This is something that I live by. I believe your staff members are one of the most important keys to a successful business. They represent your business and in my case myself! I believe this is maybe a factor of business that is overlooked and under thought about. If people enjoy where they come to work and truly feel valued & appreciated, their work ethic will show this. It's pretty simple!

What is something you try to implement in your management style to empower your employees?
Listen to them, hear their ideas, give them time and make it known they are appreciated. I make a huge effort to tell them when they do a great job because I know I like to hear that for myself! Recognising the little things goes a long way 🥰

Is there anything your employees do that empowers you as the Director?
Good question! I like that everyone else is so level headed and I feel like this has a calming affect on me. Gosh, there's load of things! A couple of examples would be, I like that Lisa (our beautiful Distribution and Office Coordinator) takes care in celebrating little things such as Halloween, Easter etc and puts in effort to create a fun community celebrating these holidays. I like that Amelia performs rituals to keep her mind and body healthy & focused. I guess I feel inspired and empowered at the same time.

What has been your proudest moment in establishing a business?
The rebrand of our balms last September. Seeing all our hard work come together and be such a huge success. It was literally the breaking point for my business #nomoney!

What’s your number one tip for successful management?
Implementing effective systems so everyone can work in harmony. Being a small business, this is still a work in process however we will get there!!
